Mirsad Türkcan

Mirsad Türkcan is a Turkish former professional basketball player and owner of IstBasket. Mirsad has an excellent professional career; he is a three-time All-EuroLeague Team member and the fourth best rebounder in the history of EuroLeague (with 1,287 total rebounds).


Türkcan grew up with Efes Pilsen’s junior team. He made his professional debut also with Efes Pilsen during the 1994–95 season.  He was selected by the Houston Rockets in the 1998 NBA Draft, but had to wait for his  debut in the NBA.


Because of the 1998–99 NBA lockout, he returned to Istanbul and continued to play for Efes Pilsen. He was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in January 1999, and then to the New York Knicks in March 1999. He was the first Turkish basketball player to play in the National Basketball Association, where he played for New York and Milwaukee.

After this he returned to Europe and played in France (Paris Basket Racing). In the following years he signed contracts with CSKA Moscow (2001/2002), Montepaschi Siena (2002/2003), CSKA (2003/2004) and Dynamo Moscow (2004/2005). In the summer of 2006 he signed a contract with the Turkish team Fenerbahçe, where he remained until his retirement in 2012, finishing his excellent career after 19 years.


He was also a member of the senior Turkish national team at the following international tournaments: EuroBasket 1995, EuroBasket 1997, EuroBasket 1999, EuroBasket 2001, the 2002 FIBA World Championship, EuroBasket 2003, and EuroBasket 2005. Turkcan won the silver medal with the Turkish NT at the 2001 EuroBasket.
